Why Homeowners Are Obsessed With Recessed Lighting ✨
Have you ever walked into a beautifully decorated room and thought,“Something is missing”, but couldn't quite figure out what?
After more than 30 years as a master electrician, I can tell you that the answer is often hiding above your head.
Lighting.
Recessed lighting has become one of the most popular ways to transform a home because it can dramatically change how a space looks and feels without changing the walls, floors, cabinets or furniture. A room that once felt dark and dated can suddenly feel open, comfortable and completely refreshed. And here's the interesting part: good lighting isn't simply about adding more light. It's about putting the right light in the right place.
More Lights Doesn't Always Mean Better Lighting
One of the biggest mistakes I see homeowners make is thinking,“Let's put a bunch of recessed lights in the ceiling!”
That's when a beautiful lighting plan can turn into an airport runway. Spacing, beam angle, ceiling height, room dimensions, furniture placement and the purpose of the space all matter. A kitchen, for example, may need focused lighting over countertops and work areas, while a living room may benefit from softer, layered illumination. The goal isn't to make every corner equally bright. The goal is to make the room comfortable and functional.
Your Lighting Can Actually Change the Mood
Here's a fact many people don't think about: light influences how we perceive a space and the color temperature of that light can dramatically affect its atmosphere. Warmer light tends to create a cozy, inviting feeling, while cooler light can create a cleaner, more energetic appearance. That's one reason the same room can feel completely different depending on the lighting.
And then there are dimmers. Modern LED-compatible dimmers allow homeowners to adjust lighting throughout the day. Bright light might be perfect when you're preparing dinner, while softer illumination may be much better when everyone is relaxing afterward. One room. Two completely different experiences.
Older Home? You Don't Need to Start Over.
One of my favorite things about lighting is its ability to modernize a home without a major renovation. You don't necessarily need new cabinets, new flooring or a complete remodel to make a space feel dramatically different. Sometimes, you simply need to stop looking at the room as it is and start looking at how the room is being illuminated.
At Big Sky Electric Corp., we help homeowners think beyond simply installing lights. We look at how the space is used, where people work, where they gather, what needs to be highlighted and how the lighting should feel.
Because after 30-plus years in this business, I've learned something:
The best lighting is the lighting you notice without realizing you're noticing it.
It shouldn't glare in your eyes. It shouldn't leave dark corners everywhere. It shouldn't make your kitchen look like a warehouse. It should simply make your home feel better.
Sometimes the difference between“This room is fine”and“Wow, I love this room” isn't a new sofa, a fresh coat of paint or an expensive renovation.
Sometimes, it's what's happening above your head. 💡
